What is the Difference Between a Service Animal and an Emotional Support Animal?
Service Animal Registration
A service dog is any dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability, including a physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual, or other mental disability. Other species of animals, whether wild or domestic, trained or untrained, are not considered service dogs.
Emotional Support Animal Registration
An emotional support animal (ESA) is a pet that provides companionship to a person who suffers from symptoms of a mental or emotional disability. ESA's are considered "treatment" for Nearly all domestic pets qualify.
Do I Qualify For a Service Dog?
To continue the service dog registration process, you and your dog must only meet two criteria. You won't need a doctor's prescription or other documentation to qualify or register:
You: Must either have great difficulty or be unable to perform at least one important life-task without assistance. Examples include: balance issues; difficulty walking, seeing, or hearing; or any condition might require you to be alerted, such as seizures, diabetes, etc. Read below for a list of qualifying disabilities to see 20 different types of disabilities that may qualify you to register a service dog.
Your Dog: Must be trained to assist you with the important life-task. Even if your dog "just knows how" to assist you, like sensing when a diabetic's blood sugar is low (a dangerous situation), your dog would need to be trained to alert you that your blood sugar is low. You or anyone may train your dog. Click here for a list of things your service dog might be trained to do.

You: Must have an emotional/mental challenge, such as anxiety, depression, high stress, to name a few. You must also obtain a prescription letter from a therapist or medical doctor. Your Pet: Nearly any domestic pet qualifies for ESA registration, including dogs, cats, birds, mice, rabbits, snakes, ferrets, pigs, and many more. Most important, your pet does NOT have to be trained to perform a task. That's because the very presence of your pet helps your emotional/mental disability.
